Parametric lightweight design of a direct-drive wind turbine electrical generator supporting structure for minimising dynamic response

Heavy, large and robust supporting structures are needed to keep the airgap clearance of direct-drive multi-MW wind turbine electrical generators open stable. As rotating pieces machinery, vibrate when their natural frequencies excited introducing potentially amplitude oscillations due forces acting on them that could cause structural fatigue, noise and, in worst-case scenario, sudden collapse. A novel procedure for cost-effective dynamically efficient design a generator has been developed through series different finite element studies proposed 3MW machine with conical rotor structure working under extreme conditions. Following parametric approach coupled use topology optimisation tool it was demonstrated mass dynamic response can be minimised, while complying deflection requirements.
